Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is a specialized imaging technique used to visualize the prostate gland, seminal vesicles, and surrounding pelvic structures. It is commonly performed in men with symptoms of prostate enlargement, elevated prostate-specific antigen (PSA), infertility, or suspected malignancy. TRUS provides high-resolution, real-time images, making it particularly valuable for guiding diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.During the examination, a small ultrasound probe is gently inserted into the rectum, allowing close proximity to the prostate for detailed assessment.
TRUS helps measure prostate size, detect nodules, evaluate echotexture, and assess asymmetry that may suggest benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostatitis, or prostate cancer. When combined with Doppler, it can evaluate vascularity and identify areas suspicious for malignancy.
A major application of TRUS is guiding prostate biopsies with high precision, improving diagnostic accuracy. It is also used in fertility evaluations to assess ejaculatory ducts and seminal vesicles. TRUS is safe, minimally invasive, and widely utilized in urological practice
