A follicular study, also known as follicular monitoring, is a serial ultrasound examination used to track the development of ovarian follicles during a woman’s menstrual cycle. It plays a major role in evaluating ovulation, guiding fertility treatments, and optimizing the timing of natural conception or assisted reproductive techniques such as intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). The study typically begins in the early follicular phase and continues with repeated scans every few days until ovulation is confirmed. Using transvaginal ultrasound, the size, number, and growth pattern of dominant follicles are measured. A mature follicle usually reaches 18–24 mm size before it gets ruptured. The endometrial thickness and pattern are also assessed to determine uterine receptivity. Follicular study helps detect an ovulation, polycystic ovarian morphology, or premature ovulation, enabling clinicians to adjust treatment protocols.
