Chest ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique used to evaluate the pleura, lungs, chest wall, particularly when radiation exposure is a concern. It is highly sensitive for detecting pleural effusions, pulmonary consolidations, and chest wall masses. High-frequency linear and low-frequency convex transducers are used depending on the depth of the target structure. Real-time imaging allows assessment of lung sliding, and dynamic features such as diaphragmatic movement. Doppler ultrasound can evaluate vascularity in masses or effusions. It also guides procedures like thoracentesis, chest drain insertion, and biopsies. While limited in visualizing aerated lung parenchyma , ultrasound provides rapid, radiation-free assessment, making it an essential tool in emergency, critical care, and respiratory medicine.
