HAEMATOLOGY

RBC Fragility Test (Osmotic Fragility Test For RBC)

Also Known As: RBC Fragility Test (Osmotic Fragility Test For RBC)
Osmotic fragility measures the red blood cell resistance to being destroyed (hemolysed) while being exposed to varying levels of dilution of saline solution. This test is used to detect conditions such as Hereditary spherocytosis & Thalassemia. Conditions that increase red cell fragility are Hereditary spherocytosis, Autoimmune hemolytic anemia, toxins, poisons, infections & drugs like aspirin. Decreased red cell fragility is seen in Thalassemia, Iron deficiency anemia & Sickle cell anemia.

2. Do I need to report fasting?
This Test does not require fasting.
3. How soon will I get reports?
Report Next day except sunday.
4. Why this test is important ?
The Red Blood Cell (RBC) Fragility Test is important because it evaluates how susceptible your red blood cells are to breaking (hemolysis) under stress, which helps detect certain anemias and hereditary blood disorders.
5. Are the machines automated?
Yes, fully automated analysers are used.

The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:

  • Registration date and time
  • Type of scan or test
  • Scan time or sample collection time

In uncommon circumstances, TAT may be delayed due to test complexity or reasons beyond our control. You will be informed of the estimated TAT at the time of registration.
