Indirect Coombs Test

HAEMATOLOGY

Indirect Coombs Test

Also Known As: ICT
Indirect Coombs Test (ICT) detects antibodies against red blood cells (RBCs) in the blood before they bind to RBCs.This test used to find free antibodies in the plasma that could target RBC antigens. Unlike the Direct Coombs Test (which detects antibodies already attached to RBCs), ICT looks for antibodies circulating in the blood. ICT is done to prevent hemolytic transfusion reactions. In Rh-negative mothers, detects anti-D antibodies that could harm an Rh-positive fetus (Hemolytic Disease of the Newborn, HDN). Also to detect Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia (Indirect Detection).

The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:

  • Registration date and time
  • Type of scan or test
  • Scan time or sample collection time

In uncommon circumstances, TAT may be delayed due to test complexity or reasons beyond our control. You will be informed of the estimated TAT at the time of registration.
