About This Test
Synovial fluid is the lubricating fluid present inside joints (knees, elbows, shoulders, etc.). When a joint becomes swollen due to infection, inflammation, trauma, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, or other joint diseases, fluid is aspirated from the joint (arthrocentesis) and examined. The fluid is interpreted by analysing cell count , sugar & protein level, type of cells, presence of coagulum & bacteriological status. Comment is also made on presence of malignant cells, mesothelial cells and macrophages. Protein level helps to divide the fluid into exudates and transudate. If sugar levels are reduced, acute inflammation is suspected.Report is interpreted as malignan/suspicious/inflammatory/ transudate/Negative for malignancy. Advisory services are provided wherever required.
