Pleural fluid is the thin fluid that normally lubricates the space between the lungs and the chest wall (pleural cavity). When excess fluid accumulates (pleural effusion), it is removed by a procedure called thoracentesis and sent for laboratory examination. A Pleural Fluid Examination Report helps determine the cause of pleural effusion—whether infection, tuberculosis, malignancy, heart failure, liver disease, kidney disease, or other conditions. The fluid is interpreted by analysing cell count , sugar & protein level, type of cells, presence of coagulum & bacteriological status. Comment is also made on presence of malignant cells, mesothelial cells and macrophages. Protein level helps to divide the fluid into exudates and transudate. If sugar levels are reduced, acute inflammation is suspected.Report is interpreted as malignan/suspicious/inflammatory/ transudate/Negative for malignancy. Advisory services are provided wherever required.
