Also Known As: Urine Cytology
Cytology is the examination of individual cells under a microscope to detect Infections, Inflammation, Precancerous changes, Cancer (malignancy). Cytology is commonly used for early cancer detection and diagnosis of fluids or masses in the body. Cytology can be done in any of the body fluid like pus, oral, fluid, urine. Mainly cytology test evaluates cell size and shape, Cell arrangement, Nuclear changes, Presence of inflammation, Presence of microorganisms, Atypical or malignant cells and background: necrosis, mucus, blood, protein, etc. Cytology test helps to detect caners, inflammation and infections.

Submit Body fluids (Ascitic / Pleural / Pericardial / CSF/ Synovial / Prostatic / Urethral) OR Bronchial washings / Lavage OR Sputum OR second morning Urine specimen OR Nipple discharge in a sterile screw capped container. Mix with equal quantities of 50% alcohol. Alternatively centrifuge, make smears from the deposit and fix in Absolute alcohol for 30 minutes and air dry. Do not allow smears to air dry before fixation. Specimens in syringes are not acceptable. Brief clinical history is mandatory.

It involves examining cells from body fluids or minor procedures to detect infections or
cancer.
2. What samples are used?
For Urine (morning second sample), pus, fluid and more.
3. Is FNAC/Fluid aspiration painful?
It may cause slight discomfort but is generally well tolerated.
4. How soon are reports available?
Most cytology reports are ready within 24–48 hours.
5. Why is cytology done?
To identify lumps, swellings, infections and early cancerous changes.

The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:

  • Registration date and time
  • Type of scan or test
  • Scan time or sample collection time

In uncommon circumstances, TAT may be delayed due to test complexity or reasons beyond our control. You will be informed of the estimated TAT at the time of registration.
