This test detects porphyrins in urine. Porphyrins are intermediates in the heme synthesis pathway. Porphyrias can cause significant symptoms involving your peripheral & central nervous systems. Symptoms of acute porphyrias include severe pain in abdomen, chest & legs, constipation, muscle pain, brownish urine, anxiety, hallucinations, seizures etc. This test indicates whether porphyrin is detected in your urine.
