Urine for Porphobilinogen (Screening Test, Random Urine)

Also Known As: Urine for Porphobilinogen (Screening Test Random Urine)
This test detects Porphobilinogen (PBG) in urine — an intermediate in heme synthesis. Porphobilinogen increases markedly in Acute Porphyrias, especially Acute Intermittent Porphyria (AIP). This is an important emergency screening test for porphyria during acute attacks, helps differentiate porphyria from other causes of severe abdominal pain, supports diagnosis of acute hepatic porphyrias. This is a screening test only.
