About This Test
The Stool pH test measures the acidity or alkalinity of a stool sample. It is a simple, rapid test used mainly to evaluate carbohydrate malabsorption and certain causes of chronic diarrhea. This test is performed using pH indicator paper. This test signifies Carbohydrate Malabsorption which is most common cause. Undigested carbohydrates reach the colon → fermented by bacteria → produce short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) → acidic stool. It detects Infective Diarrhea due to increased fermentation, reduced carbohydrate absorption.
