Valproic Acid Assay

CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

Valproic Acid Assay

Also Known As: Valproate Level/Sodium valproate
Valproic acid (also known as valproate level) is an anticonvulsant and mood-stabilizing drug used for the treatment of Epilepsy (generalized and partial seizures); Bipolar disorder; Migraine prophylaxis. Therapeutic monitoring of valproic acid ensures that plasma concentrations remain within the effective therapeutic range and helps avoid toxicity or subtherapeutic levels. Since valproic acid is highly protein-bound and metabolized in the liver, serum levels can vary due to dose, liver function, drug interactions, and patient age. Several factors complicate interpretation of VPA levels, including time interval between drug administration and blood sampling, the type of seizures treated, albumin concentration and factors affecting albumin binding of VPA, and the presence of other anti-epileptic drugs and pharmacologically- active metabolites of VPA.

1. What tests are done in Clinical Biochemistry?
These tests measure things like blood sugar, liver function, kidney function, cholesterol and
electrolytes.
2. Do I need to report fasting?before these tests?
No, Fasting is not required.
3. How soon will I get my reports?
Mon-Sat, sample before 4pm, report same day and sunday reports, next day.
4. Are biochemistry tests reliable?
Yes. We use fully automated machines that ensure accurate and consistent results.
5. Can these tests detect early health problems?
This test measures the level of valproic acid (an anti-seizure/anticonvulsant medication) in the blood and used to monitor drug therapy, ensure therapeutic levels, and avoid toxicity

The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:

  • Registration date and time
  • Type of scan or test
  • Scan time or sample collection time

In uncommon circumstances, TAT may be delayed due to test complexity or reasons beyond our control. You will be informed of the estimated TAT at the time of registration.
