CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

Urea

Also Known As: Serum Urea S. Urea
The Urea Blood Test measures the amount of urea present in the blood. Urea is the major end product of protein and amino acid metabolism, formed in the liver by the urea (ornithine) cycle from ammonia produced during protein breakdown. It is excreted mainly by the kidneys, and therefore, the blood urea concentration reflects the balance between urea production (hepatic function) and urea excretion (renal function). This test is commonly used as part of a Renal Function Test (RFT) or Kidney Profile to assess renal function, protein metabolism, and hydration status.

1. What tests are done in Clinical Biochemistry?
These tests measure things like blood sugar, liver function, kidney function, cholesterol and
electrolytes.
2. Do I need to report fasting?before these tests?
No, Fasting is not required.
3. How soon will I get my reports?
Mon-Sat, sample before 4pm, report same day and sunday reports, next day.
4. Are biochemistry tests reliable?
Yes. We use fully automated machines that ensure accurate and consistent results.
5. Can these tests detect early health problems?
Yes — a urea test can help detect early health problems, particularly related to kidney function, hydration, and protein metabolism

The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:

  • Registration date and time
  • Type of scan or test
  • Scan time or sample collection time

In uncommon circumstances, TAT may be delayed due to test complexity or reasons beyond our control. You will be informed of the estimated TAT at the time of registration.
