About This Test
Triglycerides are a type of fat (lipid) found in your blood. After eating, your body converts unused calories—especially from carbohydrates—into triglycerides, which are stored in fat cells. Later, hormones release triglycerides for energy between meals.
High triglyceride levels can contribute to hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), increasing the risk of heart disease, stroke, and pancreatitis.
This test is also used to monitor treatment in patients with dyslipidemia, to evaluate metabolic disorders, such as diabetes or obesity, to monitor lipid-lowering therapy.
