The Spot Urine Magnesium Test measures the concentration of magnesium (Mg²⁺) in a single, randomly collected urine sample. It helps assess renal handling of magnesium — whether the kidneys are conserving or excreting too much magnesium. It is most useful for determining the cause of abnormal blood magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia or hypermagnesemia). This test is used to evaluate causes of hypomagnesemia or hypermagnesemia, to assess renal magnesium wasting, monitor magnesium loss in patients on diuretics or chemotherapy, evaluate tubular function in renal disorders, differentiate renal vs. gastrointestinal magnesium loss
