The Serum–Ascitic Albumin Gradient (SAAG) is a calculated value used to differentiate the causes of ascites (the abnormal accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity). It is based on the difference in albumin concentration between the serum and the ascitic fluid. SAAG helps determine whether ascites is caused by portal hypertension (increased pressure in the portal venous system) or by non-portal hypertensive causes such as infection or malignancy. It is more accurate than the older transudate vs. exudate classification for ascitic fluid.

1. What tests are done in Clinical Biochemistry?
These tests measure things like blood sugar, liver function, kidney function, cholesterol and
electrolytes.
2. Do I need to report fasting?before these tests?
No, Fasting is not required.
3. How soon will I get my reports?
Mon-Sat, sample before 4pm, report same day and sunday reports, next day.
4. Are biochemistry tests reliable?
Yes. We use fully automated machines that ensure accurate and consistent results.
5. Can these tests detect early health problems?
No, SAAG is not a general “early disease screening” test. It is a diagnostic tool used after ascites (fluid in the abdomen) is already present to identify the cause of ascites.

The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:

  • Registration date and time
  • Type of scan or test
  • Scan time or sample collection time

In uncommon circumstances, TAT may be delayed due to test complexity or reasons beyond our control. You will be informed of the estimated TAT at the time of registration.
