The Prolactin (Pooled Sample) test measures the average level of prolactin hormone in the blood by taking two or more blood samples at short intervals. This method helps to reduce false elevations that may occur due to stress, pain, or venipuncture-related anxiety, which can temporarily increase prolactin levels. Prolactin secretion is pulsatile and stress-sensitive — it can rise sharply due to emotional stress, pain during blood draw, physical exertion, sleep cycle fluctuations. Hence, a pooled sample (average of 2–3 samples) provides a more accurate baseline of the patient’s true prolactin level.
