Procalcitonin (PCT) is a peptide precursor of the hormone calcitonin, which is normally produced by the C-cells of the thyroid gland. However, during a systemic bacterial infection or sepsis, many tissues (especially lungs, liver, and intestines) start producing procalcitonin in response to bacterial toxins and inflammatory cytokines. Hence, Procalcitonin is a biomarker for severe bacterial infections and sepsis. It helps distinguish bacterial infections from viral or non-infectious inflammatory conditions.

1. What tests are done in Clinical Biochemistry?
These tests measure things like blood sugar, liver function, kidney function, cholesterol and
electrolytes.
2. Do I need to report fasting?before these tests?
No, Fasting is not required.
3. How soon will I get my reports?
Mon-Sat, sample before 4pm, report same day and sunday reports, next day.
4. Are biochemistry tests reliable?
Yes. We use fully automated machines that ensure accurate and consistent results.
5. Can these tests detect early health problems?
Yes. PCT (Procalcitonin) testing can detect early health problems, particularly early bacterial infections and sepsis

The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:

  • Registration date and time
  • Type of scan or test
  • Scan time or sample collection time

In uncommon circumstances, TAT may be delayed due to test complexity or reasons beyond our control. You will be informed of the estimated TAT at the time of registration.
