CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

Potassium

Also Known As: K+
The Potassium test measures the amount of potassium ion (K⁺) in your blood. Potassium is an essential electrolyte and mineral that helps regulate: Nerve function, Muscle contraction (especially heart muscle), Fluid balance, Acid-base balance. Most of the body’s potassium (~98%) is inside cells, while a small amount circulates in the blood — this small portion is vital for heart rhythm and muscle function. This test is done to diagnose or Monitor: Kidney disease or failure, Hypertension (high blood pressure), Acid-base disorders (metabolic acidosis/alkalosis), Dehydration, Adrenal gland disorders (Addison’s or Cushing’s disease), Heart rhythm problems (arrhythmia)

The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:

  • Registration date and time
