Phenytoin Level (Drug Level)

CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

Phenytoin Level (Drug Level)

Also Known As: Eptoin Serum Eptoin Serum Phenytoin
The Phenytoin blood test measures the concentration of phenytoin (an anticonvulsant drug) in the bloodstream. Phenytoin is primarily used to prevent and control seizures (epilepsy) and sometimes for cardiac arrhythmias. Because the therapeutic range is narrow, both under-dosing and over-dosing can be dangerous. Hence, this test ensures the drug is at an effective and safe level in the body. This test is done to ensure phenytoin levels remain within the therapeutic window, to investigate signs of toxicity (e.g., dizziness, double vision, confusion, unsteady gait), recurrent seizures and more.

1. What tests are done in Clinical Biochemistry?
These tests measure things like blood sugar, liver function, kidney function, cholesterol and
electrolytes.
2. Do I need to report fasting?before these tests?
No, Fasting is not required.
3. How soon will I get my reports?
Mon-Sat, sample before 4pm, report same day and sunday reports, next day.
4. Are biochemistry tests reliable?
Yes. We use fully automated machines that ensure accurate and consistent results.
5. Can these tests detect early health problems?
Yes, Phenytoin is primarily a therapeutic drug monitoring test used to measure phenytoin levels in the blood for patients taking it to control seizures.

The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:

  • Registration date and time
  • Type of scan or test
  • Scan time or sample collection time

In uncommon circumstances, TAT may be delayed due to test complexity or reasons beyond our control. You will be informed of the estimated TAT at the time of registration.
