Lipoprotein (a) is a special type of LDL cholesterol particle with an attached apolipoprotein(a). High Lp(a) levels are genetically determined and significantly increase the risk of: 1. Premature heart disease 2. Heart attacks 3. Stroke 4. Aortic valve stenosis Lp(a) is considered an independent cardiovascular risk factor. Doctors order Lp(a) testing for patients who have: 1. Strong family history of early heart disease 2. Personal history of heart attack or stroke at a young age 3. Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) 4. High LDL cholesterol not responding to treatment 5. Unexplained cardiovascular disease despite normal lipid profile 6. High-risk individuals with borderline lipid levels
