CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

Free T3

Also Known As: FT3 Free Triiodothyronine T3 (Free)
Triiodothyronine (T3) is secreted by the thyroid gland in 2 forms - free & bound. This test measures free form only. T4 gets converted to T3 as required by the body. The Free T3 (Triiodothyronine) test measures the level of unbound, active T3 hormone circulating in the blood. Free T3 reflects the biologically active thyroid hormone responsible for regulating metabolism, heart rate, body temperature, Energy production. FT3 is especially useful for evaluating hyperthyroidism. T3 test is performed to evaluate your thyroid gland function; to help diagnose thyroid disease; to monitor effectiveness of thyroid treatment. Patients with overactive thyroid gland may show high T3 levels but T4 levels maybe normal.
