The Folic Acid (Folate) blood test measures the level of folate, a B-vitamin essential for red blood cell formation, DNA synthesis, Proper cell growth, Nervous system function. Folate deficiency is a common cause of anemia, especially in pregnancy and malnutrition.
Folate deficiency is characteristically associated with macrocytosis and megaloblastic anemia, neuropsychiatric disorders and neural tube defects. It is most commonly due to insufficient dietary intake and is most frequently encountered in pregnant women or in alcoholics.Evaluation of macrocytic anemias commonly requires measurement of the serum concentration of both vitamin B12 and folate.
