DHEA-S (Dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate) is a hormone produced mainly by the adrenal glands, with small amounts from the ovaries and testes. It serves as a precursor for male and female sex hormones (androgens and estrogens).Because DHEA-S is produced almost entirely by the adrenal cortex and circulates in stable levels, it is an excellent marker of adrenal gland function. DHEAS is useful in the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of hyperandrogenism in women.Pronounced elevations of DHEA-S may be indicative of androgen-producing adrenal tumors such as adrenal carcinomas. It is an adjunct in the diagnosis of congenital adrenal hyperplasia(CAH) and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).
