Carcino Embryonic Antigen (CEA)

CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

Carcino Embryonic Antigen (CEA)

Also Known As: CEA Serum CEA S. CEA
CEA is reliable tumour marker for already diagnosed Colo-Rectal carcinoma. Baseline levels measured prior to therapeutic intervention, and followed later by serial periodical measurements, will predict the outcome of the therapy. It also helps in early discovery of recurrences, relapses and metastases. CEA may also be elevated in Carcinomas of Breast, Ovaries, Lungs, Prostrate, Pancreas, Stomach, Liver and thyroid (Medullary). Nonmalignant conditions showing elevated CEA levels include Ulcerative Colitis, Pancreatitis, Hepatitis, Cirrhosis, Obstructive Jaundice, Bronchitis and heavy smokers. Therefore, this parameter should never be used as a screening test for diagnosis of Colo-Rectal Carcinomas, but only as an aid in follow-up studies. Combined use of CEA with other tumour markers increases sensitivity, specificity and predictability of these parameters

1. What tests are done in Clinical Biochemistry?
These tests measure things like blood sugar, liver function, kidney function, cholesterol and
electrolytes.
2. Do I need to report fasting?before these tests?
Fasting is not required.
3. How soon will I get my reports?
Mon-Sat, sample before 4pm, report same day and sunday reports, next day.
4. Are biochemistry tests reliable?
Yes. We use fully automated machines that ensure accurate and consistent results.
5. Can these tests detect early health problems?
Yes - CEA (Carcinoembryonic Antigen) can detect health problems, primarily certain cancers and some non-cancerous conditions, though it is not a stand-alone diagnostic test.

The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:

  • Registration date and time
  • Type of scan or test
  • Scan time or sample collection time

In uncommon circumstances, TAT may be delayed due to test complexity or reasons beyond our control. You will be informed of the estimated TAT at the time of registration.
