Bilirubin

CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY

Bilirubin

Also Known As: Total Bilirubin Bil Serum Bilirubin
The Bilirubin blood test measures the amount of bilirubin — a yellow pigment formed by the breakdown of red blood cells When hemoglobin (from old red blood cells) breaks down, it produces unconjugated (indirect) bilirubin. The liver processes this bilirubin by binding it to glucuronic acid, forming conjugated (direct) bilirubin, which is water-soluble and excreted in bile. In Newborns Temporary rise in bilirubin (physiologic jaundice) is common 2–5 days after birth due to immature liver conjugation. Very high levels can cause kernicterus (brain damage), so monitoring is critical.

1. What tests are done in Clinical Biochemistry?
These tests measure things like blood sugar, liver function, kidney function, cholesterol, electrolytes.
2. Do I need to report fasting?before these tests?
Fasting is not required.
3. How soon will I get my reports?
Mon-Sat, sample before 4pm, report same day and sunday reports, next day.
4. Are biochemistry tests reliable?
Yes. We use fully automated machines that ensure accurate and consistent results.
5. Can these tests detect early health problems?
Yes , bilirubin can detect health problems, especially those related to the liver, bile ducts, or red blood cells. It is one of the most common lab tests for evaluating jaundice and liver function.

The Turnaround Time (TAT) depends on the following factors:

  • Registration date and time
  • Type of scan or test
  • Scan time or sample collection time

In uncommon circumstances, TAT may be delayed due to test complexity or reasons beyond our control. You will be informed of the estimated TAT at the time of registration.
