About This Test
The Prolactin test measures the level of prolactin hormone in the blood.
Prolactin is a protein hormone produced by the anterior pituitary gland. Its primary function is to Stimulate breast development and milk production after childbirth (lactation) , Regulate reproductive hormones by inhibiting gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH).
Serum prolactin levels can increase upto 10 to 50-fold during pregnancy and postpartum lactation.
Exercise, eating, stress, trauma and sleep also cause transient increases in prolactin levels.
Consistently elevated serum prolactin levels in the absence of pregnancy and postpartum lactation, are indicative of hyperprolactinemia. Hypersecretion of prolactin can be caused by pituitary adenomas, hypothalamic disease, breast or chest wall stimulation, renal failure, hypothyroidism and a number of drugs, including many antidepressants.
Hyperprolactinemia often results in galactorrhea, amenorrhea and infertility in females and impotence and hypogonadism in males.
