Also Known As:

Fluid examination

Fluid aspiration means removing fluid from a body cavity or space using a needle and syringe. This fluid is then sent to the lab for routine examination to find the cause of swelling, infection, inflammation, or abnormal accumulation. The fluid is interpreted by analysing cell count , sugar & protein level, type of cells, presence of coagulum & bacteriological status. Comment is also made on presence of malignant cells, mesothelial cells and macrophages. Protein level helps to divide the fluid into exudates and transudate. If sugar levels are reduced, acute inflammation is suspected.Report is interpreted as malignant/suspicious/inflammatory/ transudate/Negative for malignancy. Advisory services are provided wherever required.
