About This Test
Spleno-portal axis Doppler ultrasound is a key non-invasive technique used to assess blood flow within the spleen, splenic vein, portal vein, and their tributaries. It plays an essential role in evaluating patients with suspected or known portal hypertension, liver cirrhosis, splenic congestion, and portal vein thrombosis. Using grayscale imaging alongside color and spectral Doppler, the study provides detailed information about vessel patency, flow direction, and velocity. Doppler can also detect collateral circulation, such as splenorenal or paraumbilical varices, which form in advanced disease. In addition, splenic vein assessment helps identify thrombosis, compression, or increased resistance related to splenomegaly.
