About This Test
A renal Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging study used to evaluate blood flow to and within the kidneys. By using high-frequency sound waves, it measures the velocity and direction of blood flow in the renal arteries, segmental arteries, and veins. This test is particularly useful for detecting renal artery stenosis, a common cause of secondary hypertension, as well as identifying thrombosis, aneurysms, or abnormalities in kidney perfusion. It also helps assess transplanted kidneys for early signs of rejection or vascular complications. The procedure is painless, radiation-free, and typically takes 20 to 30 minutes. During the exam, a transducer is gently moved across the abdomen and flanks while the patient lies still, sometimes with breath-holding instructions to improve image quality. Renal Doppler findings assist clinicians in diagnosing vascular causes of hypertension, evaluating kidney function, and guiding treatment decisions, making it a valuable tool in nephrology and vascular assessment.
