About This Test
A liver abdominal Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging study used to evaluate blood flow within the major vessels of the liver and surrounding abdominal structures. Using high-frequency sound waves, it provides real-time images and measures the velocity and direction of blood flow in the portal vein, hepatic arteries, and hepatic veins. This test is essential for assessing conditions such as portal hypertension, cirrhosis, thrombosis, hepatic congestion, and vascular complications after liver transplant. It also helps detect abnormal shunts, elevated pressures, or reduced flow that may indicate underlying liver disease. The procedure is painless, radiation-free, and usually completed within 15 to 20 minutes.
