About This Test
The Rapid Blood AFB Culture & Identification Test is a specialized microbiology test used to detect Mycobacteria (especially Mycobacterium tuberculosis and other atypical mycobacteria) in the bloodstream. This test is usually done in immunocompromised patients, because TB and atypical mycobacteria can sometimes spread into the blood (mycobacteremia). The culture helps detect Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTB) and Non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM).
