About This Test
This is a screening serological test for syphillis. It detects antibodies against lipoidal ( cardiolipin , cholesterol, lecithin) material released from damaged host cells as well as lipoprotein like material released from the treponemes. It is advisable to confirm positive samples with other methods employing specific treponemal antigen test e.g. TPHA, FTA-ABS, etc as well correlate with other clinical findings. Biological false positive reactions (BFP) can be attributed to acute febril illness ,leprosy, infectious mononucleosis, autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus etc., malignancy, pregnancy and 1-2 % of general population.
