About This Test
Varicella zoster virus(VZV), synonyme: human herpes virus 3 (HHV3), is the causative agent of chickenpox (varicella) after which it establishes latency and can subsequently reactivate to cause herpes zoster(shingles). The virus is strictly human. Chickenpox-a very contagious disease - has traditionally been regarded as a benign, inevitable disease among children (25% in 1-4-year-olds, 43% in 5-8-year-olds, 27%in 9-18-year-olds) with typical blister-like rash of the entire skin. Varicella could also be a serious infection, even in childhood, but especially in young and older adults and during pregnancy.
