Glucose normally suppresses human growth hormone (hGH). Individuals with Acromegaly (excess of hGH) show no decrease or a paradoxical increase in hGH level after being given glucose. Normal individuals show hGH levels to fall after glucose administration. After successful treatment of Acromegaly, a normal response to glucose treatment is observed, although growth hormone may not fall to normal levels.

The GH suppression by glucose test (also called oral glucose tolerance GH suppression test) evaluates whether the pituitary gland appropriately suppresses GH secretion in response to high blood glucose. This test is critical for diagnosing growth hormone excess, particularly acromegaly in adults.
