C1 esterase inhibitor levels are measured for diagnosis of Hereditary Angioedema and for monitoring treatment of the disease. Fifteen percent of hereditary angioedema patients may have a normal or elevated level of C1 esterase inhibitor protein but the protein may be nonfunctional. Detection of these patients requires a functional measurement of C1 esterase inhibitor.
