Autoantibodies against neuronal surface antigens are found in patients with autoimmune encephalopathies and can mimic viral encephalitis. NMDA antibodies have been reported in some patients with HSV encephalitis. Autoimmune encephalitis maybe associated with paraneoplastic syndromes.
