About This Test
Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT) is one of the most thoroughly characterized biologically active substance released by Carcinoid tumors. Carcinoids are neuroectodermal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract and pancreas. Midgut Carcinoids release large quantity of Serotonin into circulation; however tumors derived from foregut and hindgut may produce relatively small amount of Serotonin.

Preparation / Prerequisite
3 mL (2 mL min.) serum from 1 SST. Ship refrigerated or frozen. Patient should strictly avoid bananas, walnuts, tomatoes, pineapples, plums, gooseberries, avocados, aubergines, kiwi fruits, chocolates and drugs like Lithium, MAO Inhibitor, Methyldopa, Reserpine, Fluoxetine and strenuous exercise at least 48 hours before and during specimen
