About This Test
Intrinsic Factor, produced by cells lining the stomach, binds vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) to facilitate absorption of the vitamin. This antibody impedes the action of Intrinsic Factor as observed in approximately half of the patients who develop Pernicious anemia.

Intrinsic Factor (IF) is a protein produced by the stomach’s parietal cells that is essential for vitamin B12 absorption in the small intestine. Intrinsic factor antibodies are autoantibodies that target IF, leading to impaired B12 absorption. Testing for these antibodies is crucial in diagnosing certain types of anemia.
