About This Test

Gastrin is a peptide hormone produced by mucosal G cells of gastric antrum. Gastrin levels are pathologically increased in Gastrinoma, Gastric outlet obstruction and Hypo / Achlorhydria. This assay is used to investigate patients with Achlorhydria / Pernicious anemia and Zollinger- Ellison syndrome. The assay is extremely useful in the diagnosis of Gastrinoma.

It is recommended that patient discontinues Proton pump inhibitor drugs like Omeprazole, Esomeprazole, Pantoprazole, Lansoprazole & Rabeprazole 7 days prior to sampling as these drugs may affect test results. Discontinuation should be with prior consent from the treating Physician. Overnight fasting is mandatory.

The gastrin test measures the level of gastrin hormone in the blood. Gastrin is produced by G cells in the stomach lining and regulates acid secretion. This test is essential for evaluating causes of excessive gastric acid production and suspected gastrin-secreting tumors (gastrinomas/Zollinger-Ellison syndrome).
