About This Test
Activated Factor XIII cross links with fibrin to stabilize the clot. Individuals with a deficiency of Factor XIII characteristically develop delayed bleeding, several hours to days following surgery or trauma. Deficiency is usually transmitted as an autosomal recessive trait. Umbilical stump bleeding, traumatic soft tissue & joint bleeds, recurrent pregnancy loss and spontaneous intracranial hemorrhages have also been noted.

Overnight fasting is preferred. It is recommended that patient discontinues Heparin for 1 day and Oral Anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling as these drugs may affect test results. Discontinuation should be with prior consent from the treating Physician.
The Factor XIII clot solubility test is a screening functional assay used to detect Factor XIII deficiency, a rare but serious bleeding disorder that is not detected by routine coagulation tests like PT and aPTT.
