About This Test
Deficiency of Factor VIII causes prolongation of APTT that corrects completely on mixing. Congenital Factor VIII deficiency is called Hemophilia A which is inherited in X-linked recessive manner. It affects 1 per 5000 to 10000 live male births. Males are affected whereas females are carriers. Severe form generally presents in infancy with spontaneous bleeding in soft tissues, joints or intracranial / urinary / gastrointestinal bleeding. Factor VIII is also decreased in moderate & severe forms of von Willebrand disease (VWD).

Overnight fasting is preferred. It is recommended that patient discontinues Heparin for 1 day and Oral Anticoagulants for 7 days prior to sampling as these drugs may affect test results. Discontinuation should be with prior consent from the treating Physician.
