About This Test
The PCR for Tuberculosis (TB PCR test) is a molecular diagnostic test that detects the genetic material (DNA) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis — the bacteria that causes tuberculosis.It’s much faster and more specific than traditional methods like sputum smear microscopy or culture.
PCR stands for Polymerase Chain Reaction — a technique that amplifies DNA sequences.
In TB testing, PCR identifies TB bacterial DNA directly from clinical samples such as : Sputum, Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), Pleural fluid, Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), Lymph node aspirate / tissue biopsy, Urine or blood.
This test is used to diagnose active tuberculosis (especially when smear is negative), detect extrapulmonary TB , Differentiate TB from non-tuberculous mycobacteria.
