About This Test
The Sputum for AFB test is a microscopic examination of sputum to detect acid-fast bacilli (AFB), mainly Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the bacteria that cause pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). This is one of the primary and most widely used tests for diagnosing active TB infection. It is recommended to patints having cough more than 2 weeks, on and off fever, weight loss. The test indicates the severity & infectivity, useful for infection control.
