About This Test
An LE cell is a neutrophil (a type of white blood cell) that has phagocytosed (engulfed) the denatured nucleus of another cell. The nucleus is coated with antibodies called antinuclear antibodies (ANA). This is known as the LE phenomenon: the process by which the neutrophil swallows the antibody-coated nucleus. Test is done to diagnose of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), evaluate Autoimmune Disorders.
