About This Test
Hemoglobin electrophoresis is a technique to measure hemoglobin levels and to identify abnormal types of hemoglobin. Different types of hemoglobin are: Adult type (HbA2), Fetal type (HbF), hemoglobin S (HbS), hemoglobin D Punjab (HbD) etc. This test helps to diagnose anemia, thalassemias, sickle cell disease & other hemoglobin disorders. It can be used to screen newborn babies for these defects and other serious problems. This test quantitates the hemoglobin fractions and detects if you have any variants. Your doctor will recommend this test if you have symptoms of a blood disorder; you are at risk because of your race; your child suffers from a blood disorder; you are on blood transfusion due to anemia.
