G6PD (Qualitative)

Also Known As: G6PD (Qualitative)

About This Test

G6PD is an enzyme inside red blood cells (RBCs) that protects them from damage caused by oxidative stress. If the enzyme level is low → RBCs get destroyed easily → leading to hemolytic anemia. Women who carry a defective gene can pass this deficiency to their children. They do not suffer but act as carriers. Men with defective gene always suffer from hemolytic anemia. This test identifies the deficiency in newborns. This test gives a qualitative result.
