About This Test
Ascitic fluid is the fluid that accumulates abnormally in the abdomen (peritoneal cavity). The Ascitic Fluid Examination Report is a set of laboratory tests performed on this fluid to diagnose the cause of ascites, assess severity, and guide treatment. The fluid is interpreted by analysing cell count , sugar & protein level, type of cells, presence of coagulum & bacteriological status. Comment is also made on presence of malignant cells, mesothelial cells and macrophages. Protein level helps to divide the fluid into exudates and transudate. If sugar levels are reduced, acute inflammation is suspected.Report is interpreted as malignant/suspicious/inflammatory/ transudate/Negative for malignancy. Advisory services are provided wherever required. Ascitic fluid analysis helps in diagnosis of liver cirrhosis / portal hypertension, Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP), Tuberculous peritonitis, Malignant ascites (cancers), Pancreatic ascites.
