About This Test
The 4D Parathyroid Contrast CT scan is a dynamic multiphase contrast-enhanced imaging technique designed to identify parathyroid adenomas, hyperplasias, or ectopic glands with very high accuracy. Using time-based enhancement patterns, the scan differentiates abnormal parathyroid tissue from thyroid tissue, lymph nodes, and vascular structures. The study includes contrast administration, allowing clear visualization of arterial, venous, and delayed phases. It is typically advised for patients with primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism, persistent high calcium levels, and for pre-operative localization before minimally invasive parathyroid surgery. By evaluating enhancement characteristics, radiologists can pinpoint the exact gland responsible for hormone overproduction. This improves surgical success rates and reduces operative time. The 4D scan is extremely useful when ultrasound or sestamibi tests give unclear results. It offers superior detail for deep, retrosternal, or atypical gland locations.

During CECT lower abdomen scan patients have to fast for 4-6 hours before the scan.
Remove all metallic objects, jewellery, hair clips, eyeglasses, dentures, metal underwire bras and hearing aids.
Inform your doctor if the patient has any medical history, pregnant or suspects that the patient might be pregnant, and has any past allergic reaction to the contrast media.
Patients need recent creatinine and urea test reports to examine kidney function so that contrast media is eliminated safely.

Ans- Most scans take 5–10 minutes.

Ans-Yes. CT scan is a safe imaging test. However, it exposes you to a small dose of radiation. For most people, such a small potential risk far outweighs the benefits, in terms of saving your life.
