The test detects protein (mainly albumin) in urine.
In normal conditions, only trace amounts of protein pass through the kidneys.Protein in urine (proteinuria) indicates damage or increased permeability of the glomerular filtration barrier. Persistently high proteins in urine is a sign of kidney disease called Nephrotic syndrome. Risk factors of developing proteinuria are diabetes, high blood pressure & family history of kidney disease. However there maybe short term proteinuria due to dehydration, stress, extreme cold, fever & intense physical activity. This test measures total proteins in a random sample of urine.
